Town 001 · Guareña

This is Guareña, building by building.

Every volume you see comes from the Catastro (Spain’s land registry), with its real footprint and its real number of floors. Storks nest on the tower of Santa María, as they do on so many bell towers in Extremadura.

From above, a town is a way of life.

Narrow streets that hold on to the shade, patios, farmyards and, all around, the patchwork of the Vegas Altas del Guadiana: olive groves in neat rows, vineyards, cereal fields and irrigated land.

Guareña is one of 388.

Next door are Don Benito, Villanueva de la Serena, Valdetorres, Cristina and Manchita. Each one has its own tower, its own festival, its nicknames and its way of speaking.

Why 388 Pueblos exists

When a town empties, it isn’t only the people who leave. Its festivals go too, and its nicknames, its street games and its way of naming things. We build a living copy of each one, so it can be visited, played and lived in from anywhere in the world.

Discover

Churches, squares, chapels and streets rebuilt from public data and photography. The town’s memory, told by its own people.

Play

Quests, live festivals, challenges between neighbouring towns and a passport that gets stamped town by town.

Meet up

An open place for young people from here and for those who left: friends, cousins, grandchildren and curious people from anywhere.

Origins · Guareña, Badajoz

It all starts in a town in the Vegas Altas.

388 Pueblos is the idea of Ana Pérez Toledo, an entrepreneur from Guareña. Her generation spends hours in digital worlds that have nothing to do with where they come from. She asked herself why one of those worlds couldn’t be her own town.

That’s where the project comes from: to recreate, carefully and accurately, the reality and character of Extremadura’s towns in an open digital universe. So they are not forgotten, so they help us plan them better, and so anyone, wherever they live, can come in, play and stay.

“I don’t want my town to be just a memory. I want it to be a place you can come back to from anywhere.”

The world · four layers

A real town, inside and out.

Each municipality is built in layers: data first, the game on top, people all around and, finally, decisions.

Digital twin

The town as it really is. Building volumes from the Catastro, LiDAR terrain from the IGN (Spain’s National Geographic Institute) and photogrammetry of façades, churches and corners. Measurable and easy to update.

How to play

Village life as it’s always been, now online too.

Available now

The 388 passport

Every town you visit stamps your passport. When you go there for real, you get stamped in its square as well. Collecting the whole of Extremadura is the long game.

Live

Festivals in sync

When the town is celebrating, so is the world. Open-air dances, processions and country pilgrimages, lived online by those who can’t be there.

Stories

Legends and quests

Quests written with each town’s elders: old trades, nicknames, legends and places that no longer appear on any map.

Competition

Town league

The friendly rivalry neighbouring towns have always had, with weekly challenges and rankings by district.

Available now

Play in Guareña

Wherever you press Play or Walk around, you land in Guareña: its real streets, its locals and its first quests. The other towns will join one by one.

Wake your town up

Vote for the town that gets modelled next. We take the votes to each town council as proof that people are waiting.

Open and free

All 388 towns, open to everyone.

388 Pueblos is an open-source project. For now, everything is free. Entering the towns and spending time with other people always will be.

Free, always

Getting in costs nothing

Access to the 388 towns, and spending time with other people inside them, is and always will be completely free. So are many activities and games.

Today, everything’s free

And tomorrow, no walls

Right now, nothing costs money. Later on there may be some paid services or games inside a town, always alongside many free ones and without shutting anyone out. The project is funded by the town councils that choose to wake their town up.

What we’ve done this week.

Every change to the website and the game is out in the open, because all the code is open. Here’s the latest, straight from the repositories.

For town councils

Your town, on the world map.

Your town is already built in 3D from Catastro data, and anyone can go in and see it. Waking it up does much more than offer a game: it documents heritage, helps with planning decisions, attracts visitors and brings the town back to those who live far away.

Heritage

Documented memory

Churches, chapels, houses and streets recorded in 3D before they change or disappear.

Urban planning

Decide with the model

Try out building works, a pedestrian zone or tree planting on the real town and show it to residents.

Depopulation

Young people and diaspora

A reason for young people to stay connected, and for those who left to come back, even if only in summer.

Tourism

A town people can see

A gateway to festivals, routes and local produce for people who would never have found the town.

Service 1 · one-off payment

Model my town

  • The whole town centre, building by building, at its real height
  • The church, the square and the town hall, recognisable at first glance
  • The town open in the 388 Pueblos world, free for all its residents
  • Its own info card, passport stamp and way into the game
€500 to €2,000 depending on the size of the municipality
Service 2 · per change

Plan in 3D

  • We model a planning proposal on the real town: a square, a pedestrian zone, tree planting, a building
  • Before-and-after views, to show at a council meeting or out on the street
  • Residents consulted inside the world, with their opinions and votes in the dashboard
€300 per change
Service 3 · annual fee

Council dashboard

  • Dashboard with statistics on visits, players and residents signed up
  • Activities and festivals published in the world, and notices to residents
  • Model updates when the town changes
  • Participation indicators and an annual report
€25/month · €300 a year

Prices exclude VAT. Each service fits within a minor services contract (article 118 of Spain’s Public Sector Contracts Act, Ley 9/2017): a fixed payment to model the town and, if the council wishes, the annual dashboard fee and any changes it commissions. Because the project is open source and access is free, whatever a council funds stays available to everyone.

Community

The town, outside the game too.

On the 388 Pueblos Discord, people meet up to play, suggest ideas for each town and follow the build log live. One channel per district, moderation from day one and clear rules designed for young people.

Questions

What people ask us most.

How much does it cost?

For now, everything is free. Entering the 388 towns and spending time with other people will always stay free; in the future there may be some paid services or games inside a town, alongside many free ones.

What does it take to wake my town up?

Residents and a town council. Each town has its own queue: when it reaches 100 people signed up, we take that data to its town council so it can commission the work. Sign up by choosing your town, and tell your friends and family.

Where can I talk to other players?

On the 388 Pueblos Discord, with a channel for each district, the build log and a space to suggest ideas. You’ll find it in the “Community” section.

Can I play now?

Yes. We’re testing with a waiting list: sign up with your email and you get into the Guareña beta straight away.

Can I edit my town?

Yes. 388 Pueblos is open source: the code is licensed under MIT, and the towns and their content under CC BY-SA 4.0. In the repository we explain how to propose changes to your town. The goal is for you to be able to do it without knowing how to code, too.

I’m from a town council. What do we do?

Your town is already built automatically. Waking it up in detail (square, church, streets, quests and festivals) is done together with the town council: look at the options above or ask us for a presentation.

What do you do with my data?

We only store your email and, if you want, your alias and your town, to keep you posted about the project. We explain it in the privacy policy.
